| "The Spirit of the Season"By Melody Ellenberger How do you get into the spirit of the season? Do you start by listening to your favorite holiday music while getting out your boxes of decorations and adorning your home with a fir tree decked out with twinkling lights, bows & ornaments, cinnamon candles on the mantle, holiday guest towels in the bathroom, and a candy dish filled with peppermints? Or maybe you start by hunting for those boxes of Christmas cards you bought last year on December 26th, so that you can begin the season with wishes of holiday cheer to all your friends and relatives? Or maybe you simply start at the mall? These are all pretty typical examples for "getting into the spirit." However, "typical" gets boring, doesn’t it? The usual preparations just don’t excite us as much as they used to. So, as singles, what can we do differently to boost our spirits during this holiday season? How can we avoid the depressing and lonely thoughts that so many singles struggle with at this time of year? The answer is really pretty simple: Be more giving. "But how?" you ask. Money isn’t the only thing you can give. You can give of yourself. Your time and your talents are of high value. A person who has the ability to give, has the ability to love. It’s lonely putting up decorations by yourself, isn’t it? So how about putting together a Progressive Decorating Party where 3 or 4 friends get together and help each other put up decorations at each other’s homes. How about inviting a friend or two over for a Holiday Baking Party where you can share recipes and ideas and help each other create gifts from the kitchen. Instead of shopping alone, you could call a few friends and go shopping together and help each other find the items on your lists. If you’re into crafts and prefer to make your gifts, you could invite a few other crafty people to join you and help each other with your creative designs. Break out of your box. Punch a hole in your shield of defenses. Make some phone calls and make some new friends, and this holiday season, let’s strive to break away from the selfish "Me" world. Acts 20:35 - "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Hebrews 13:16 - "And do not neglect doing good and sharing; for with such sacrifices God is pleased."
